Chapter 10

Shannon

Rebecca and I opted for grouper tacos at one of my favorite family-run restaurants on Gulf Boulevard. The place was packed with snowbirds coming back to the beach, before the onset of cold weather on the upper East Coast. It was a cycle repeated every year.

The tourists came from January through April and then dwindled somewhat as the hot summer months went by. People who owned property elsewhere but vacationed in Florida, came in the months of September, October, November and December, after the hot weather was over and liked to leave before the crowds started in January. So, this was a slow time for most of the shops and restaurants for tourists, but a busy time for owners coming down to avoid the cold, and for fixing up their rentals.

I reflected on our meeting with the sheriff and FBI agent.

“That was sort of an interesting interview with the two of them, don’t you think?” I asked Rebecca.

“Yes, it confirms what I’ve always thought. The sheriff here is pretty good. You don’t hear many complaints, and they staff their stations better than just about any other place in the country. I just can’t for the life of me understand why it’s taken so long to conclude their investigation about the bombing. That was four months ago now.”

I watched her features carefully. “I know, and I’m sure the families of the ones we lost would like some closure. But it is what it is. I’m sure if enough people work on it, they’ll eventually catch a break. But it does seem like an inordinate length of time. They’re usually right on it and get things solved right away.”

“I agree. That’s been my experience all along.”

Our order arrived and as I dug into the delicious taco, I thought about Rebecca’s phone call.

“What are the odds of me having a stalker and then you getting a stalker a few months later? Doesn’t that just sound a little too convenient?” I asked her.

She wiped her mouth on a napkin. “It does. You don’t read about that very often.”

“And the bombing is another crime entirely. It’s not a stalking crime. It’s something else, don’t you agree?”

“I sure do. And they already caught your guy. He’s serving time.”

“And the bomber is still out there.”

She stopped eating and set down the taco. For a few seconds we just stared at each other as something came to mind to both of us at the same time.

“And he’s still out there, isn’t he, Shannon?” she said it first.

“That’s right. I don’t think any of the victims were the target. I’m not even sure Marco was the target even though he was injured.”

“And that means it’s possible he’s not done, but we won’t know that until we know the motive,” Rebecca added.

“No wonder the department is having such a tough time. Along with all the forensic evidence, there just aren’t any clues,” I said.

“They asked if anyone in the company had a grudge, didn’t they? They asked that of me.
